Twitter use in SA on the up: report
South Africans are Africa’s most active ‘Tweeters’, producing twice as many Tweets as Kenya, the next most active country, a new report has found.
According to communications consultancy Portland Communications, over five million tweets were sent from South Africa in the last quarter of 2011.
Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco trailed behind with just under two million Tweets each.
Portland Communications and Tweetminster monitored more than 11.5 million location-tagged Tweets and conducted a survey of the 500 most active Twitter users to deliver what is perhaps the first comprehensive report on Twitter use in Africa.
They found that Twitter is becoming an important source of information, with 68 percent of those polled using the social media site to monitor news.
It is also used by a largely young and connected demographic – 57 percent of the tweets were sent from a cellphone, while 60 percent of users fell into the 20 to 29 age group.
The report is titled "How Africa Tweets".
